How to Dress a Child for Cold Weather

Whether you are buying child clothes online or planning to visit a brick-and-mortar store, you are faced with a question of how to dress a child for cold weather. Kids give you the two extremities most parents have a hard time handling: not moving at all and moving too much. The third problem is their inability to tell you whether they are hot or cold. Adults are kept guessing and wondering while being afraid of making the child sick with the wrong choice of clothes. Here are a few tips that will make your life easier.

1. Dress in Layers

This is a perfect advice for both babies and older children. Such approach allows you to adjust the amount of clothing on the child, depending on the way their bodies react to the outdoor temperature.

If your baby doesn’t move around too much, you have to dress her in one more layer than you would yourself. If your kid runs around like crazy, remove one layer.

2. Get The Right Base Layer

The most important layer is the base one. It should be a high-quality material that allows the skin to breathe and can absorb the moisture. While the cotton might seem to be an obvious answer for the base layer, it is not. Cotton garments hold a lot of moisture but don’t wick it away well.

The best choice for a base layer is merino wool. It’s a natural material, which can absorb a big amount of humidity without feeling wet.

3. Check the Waterproof Rating

When buying child clothes online, check the waterproof rating. It should be 1500 mm or higher. Only then, you can be sure that the child will stay dry and warm in the rain or snow.

4. Look at the Details

Pay close attention to the zippers, detachable hoods, comfortable lining, and other things that make the clothing easy to remove, wash, and wear. A garment might look fashionable but the excessive zippers, pockets, and other things can make it hard to handle. Make sure that the clothes are easy to remove.
